Merchant Inns is an award winning company with a passion for restoring freehold inns and offering sensational Michelin quality food, stylish surroundings and sensible prices. Retaining the essence of the traditional English country inn and being an integral part of the local community are at the heart of our philosophy.
We have a collection of historic 4 star inns, all in rural but easily accessible locations throughout the UK. Each one is sympathetically restored and refurbished, yet given a modern twist.
Each of our inns is unique with its own charm, personality and character, all however can be identified by the Merchant Inns signature of high quality food, informal, inviting surroundings and professional, yet relaxed service.
The Lambert Arms

The Lambert Arms is an original coaching inn, caringly restored and refurbished to an exceptional standard. Situated at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty, and just 15 minutes from Oxford, this relaxed and friendly inn is wonderfully welcoming with its open fires, comfortable leather sofas and rich warm colours.
You’ll find a comfortable and friendly bar with real ales and a mouth-watering array of food, including favourite pub classics using fresh, seasonal locally sourced produce. An a-la-carte menu is also available, featuring superb modern British cuisine, overseen by Michelin-star Executive Chef, Rob Clayton.
There are 44 stylish and spacious bedrooms decorated in muted colours, featuring home-from-home comforts such as comfy duvets, thick fluffy towels, luxurious toiletries, plasma TVs with free view channels and free Wi-Fi.
We have an on-site fitness suite for the exclusive use of our residential guests, as well as a dedicated beauty centre, ‘Skin & Tonic’ featuring the world-famous natural food-based Ella Baché range. A stunning conference and event suite for up to 140 guests is available for all kinds of events from conferences to weddings and product launches.

Talbot Inn

The new look Talbot Inn. Completely transformed inside, yet retaining its original, historical features, this traditional coaching inn has been caringly restored to its former glory, with a modern twist.
You’ll find a comfortable and friendly bar with open log fires, real ales and a mouth-watering array of food overseen by Michelin-star Executive Chef, Rob Clayton, including favourite pub classics and an innovative British-la-carte menu using fresh, seasonal locally sourced produce. We also have a fabulous new restaurant, featuring a stunning copper ceiling and glass conservatory overlooking the garden.
There are now 39 stylish and spacious bedrooms decorated in muted colours, featuring home-from-home comforts such as crisp white linen, comfy duvets, thick, fluffy towels, luxurious toiletries, plasma TVs, and free view channels.
An impressive conference and event suite for up to 120 guests is available for all kinds of events from conferences to weddings, Christmas parties and product launches.
Later in the year, we will be introducing further meeting facilities , a gym and two treatment rooms.
Horse & Groom

The Horse & Groom Inn, Charlton, is one of those rare Wiltshire pubs where we can promise you truly sensational food, drink and accommodation in glorious surroundings of the Cotswolds. Owned by the small, privately owned pub company, Merchant Inns plc, our solidly elegant 16th Century Cotswold pub is fronted by a tree-sheltered lawn, stands in its own paddock and is set well back from the Malmesbury/Cricklade Road (B4040).
A recently completed refurbishment programme has resulted in a stunning Cotswold Pub with an interior entirely in keeping with the grade II listed building where none of the charm or country inn feel has been compromised. You will still find the original fireplace and a wonderful flag stone floor in the much loved Charlton Bar whilst the dining room is now adorned with solid oak tables and chairs and a fabulous wooden rug strewn floor. Five spacious en-suite bedrooms complete the inside, whilst outside, we boast a stunning walled garden, separate children’s play area and Wiltshire’s only outside bar!
As one of the Cotswolds friendliest Wiltshire pubs with a thriving bar trade (dogs welcome), you will feel more than at home here whether popping in for a pint and a quick bar snack or lingering over a mouth watering meal with family and friends. With a serious focus on top quality food at sensible prices, our resident chef Paul Nicholson, offers imaginative modern British cuisine including a selection of classic pub dishes. You will find our menus changing with the seasons and taking significant advantage of local produce available in the Cotswolds.
Carnarvon Arms

Welcome to the Carnarvon Arms, a modern day country inn offering sensational food, stylish bedrooms and sensible prices. The Carnarvon Arms, located a short distance from junction 13 of the M4 and close to many attractions such as Highclere Castle and Newbury Race Course, is an ideal retreat for business travellers and leisure visitors alike.
Our Grade II listed building was built in the 1800s as a coaching inn providing a stop off for travellers to nearby Highclere Castle, home to the present Lord and Lady Carnarvon. It is now beautifully renovated offering a stunning dining room with a high vaulted ceiling, a thriving friendly bar, 23 stylish bedrooms and private meeting room facilities.
With our focus on great service and Michelin star quality food in stunning but informal surroundings, the Carnarvon Arms is the perfect place to meet whether for a quick lunch, a delicious evening meal, private party, Conference, Meeting, Wedding or Christmas party. or a relaxing weekend away.
Black Boy Inn

The Black Boy Inn at Milton is a gem, offering sensational food in a friendly and relaxed environment.
Owned by the small private pub company, Merchant Inns Ltd, this gorgeous 16th century long building nestles on the edge of picturesque Milton, set well back from the Milton Road which runs between Bloxham and Adderbury.
A recently completed refurbishment has resulted in a genuinely charming interior, entirely in keeping with the 400 year old building. The long room has a real woodstove at one end and a comfortable dining room at the other; brought together by the locally crafted traditional bar. A new, conservatory-style dining room - perfect for private parties or business meetings - opens out onto a gravel courtyard. Out front there is patio seating and half an acre of landscaped gardens.
